Why pistol cans need a piston

On a tilting-barrel pistol the barrel has to unlock and drop. A can's weight on the muzzle stops that. A spring-loaded piston briefly decouples the can from the barrel so the action can cycle. Fixed-barrel guns (rimfire pistols, PCCs, rifles) don't need one and use a fixed spacer instead.

What to check

  • Brand and model. Pistons aren't cross-brand compatible.
  • Thread pitch to match your barrel: 1/2x28 for most 9mm, M13.5x1 LH for HK 9mm, 9/16x24 for many .40 S&W and .578x28 for many .45 ACP barrels.
  • Spring condition on used pistons. A weak spring causes malfunctions.

Common questions

Do I need an FFL to buy this?
No. These parts are not silencer parts under the Gun Control Act, so they can ship straight to your door. Check your state and local law if you live somewhere that restricts muzzle devices.
