Stacked baffles vs. monocores
Stacked baffles are separate pieces that sit inside a tube, so you can replace a single damaged baffle or swap the stack's caliber. A monocore is one machined core with the baffles cut into it. It's stronger and simpler, but one strike can mean replacing the whole core.
What to check before you buy baffles
- Exact compatibility: brand, model and generation of the can. Baffle geometry and tube inner diameter vary even within one brand.
- Bore diameter. A .30 cal baffle in a 5.56 can changes performance; a 5.56 baffle in a .30 cal can is a baffle strike waiting to happen.
- Material: titanium is light, 17-4 stainless is tough and cheaper, and Inconel or Stellite are used for blast baffles on high-pressure hosts.
- Signs of a strike: shaved edges, off-center bore holes or erosion on the first baffle.
- Whether it's a full stack or a single position (blast baffle vs. downstream baffle).
Common questions
- Do I need an FFL to buy this?
- If you and the seller live in different states, yes. The seller ships to your FFL and you complete a 4473 and background check there. If you live in the same state, federal law allows a private sale, but many states require an FFL transfer anyway. Check your state's rules before you meet.
